DAY TRIPS
Take day trips to the islands of Serpentara and Cavoli to see nesting birds such as Audouin’s gull, go horse-riding on the beach to the Porto Giunco Tower, and much more…
SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING
Villasimius is located on the Capo Carbonara Promontory, not far from the protected marine area. The ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling fans. The sea around the islands of Cavoli and Serpentara offers an incredible spectacle of nature. You can see amazing marine life and plants here: octopuses, groupers, bream and saddled sea bream, algae, and much more.
HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY
For history and archaeology enthusiasts, take time to visit the city’s Archaeological Museum, located in an old eighteenth-century farmhouse with a display of artefacts and finds that tell the story of the city, from the pre-Nuragic period to the Middle Ages. The museum also houses treasures from Phoenician, Punic and Roman times.
MADONNA DEL NAUFRAGO
This statue, in memory of shipwrecked sailors, is part of the city’s history. It was sculpted in 1979 by Pinuccio Sciola, a Sardinian artist, and can be found deep down on the sea bed of the protected marine area near the island of Cavoli. You can visit it on an organized boat trip. The festival of the Madonna del Naufrago, dedicated to this sculpture, is held every year at the end of July.
NURAGIC ART
There are tombs dug into the rock in this area which date back to the Nuragic period, such as the necropolis in the Cruccuris area, near the Roman baths of Santa Maria, Accu Is Traias, and lastly, Cuccureddus, a small community dating back first to the period of the Phoenician-Punic rule and Roman rule later. The Tower of the Old Fortress, to the south of the tourist port, overlooks Capo Carbonara, the promontory on which Villasimius is built.
THE TOWN
Take leisurely strolls along the central Via del Mare and to Piazza Gramsci, while enjoying a refreshing ice cream. There are also places for an aperitif and a tasty meal. In the height of the season, there is no shortage of bars and discos for nighttime entertainment.
